Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Wednesday afternoon at a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with members of the government that for five months the situation with the coronavirus in the capital was calm, but now it has become explosive.

According to the mayor of the capital, over the past week in Moscow, the maximum number of cases was detected — 53 thousand people. At the same time, 12 thousand of them were hospitalized.

Sobyanin stressed that now in Moscow, about 90% of all patients with coronavirus have a new mutation of the infection. He noted that this new strain has more aggressive properties, requires twice as much immunity compared to the Wuhan strain, and many people were defenseless against this aggressive infection.

The mayor of Moscow noted that the medical system of the city works almost at full capacity, but copes. Citizens are provided with everything they need. At the same time, Sobyanin warned that the system’s capabilities are not unlimited, although the margin was made large.

He also assured that the supply of vaccines to Moscow is going on, they are sufficient. Agreeing that the measure to restrict restaurant visits is tough and unpopular, the mayor explained that it is better than closing the entire industry.

“In the near future, the situation with the coronavirus will be difficult, we do not have to make optimistic forecasts,” Sobyanin said during a meeting of the Russian president with members of the government.

The mayor of Moscow noted that the city authorities will take measures on the coronavirus, based on the situation, ensuring the health of Muscovites and the work of the economy.

In response, Putin promised to continue to discuss with Sobyanin measures to reduce the risks of covid infection for residents of the capital.
