Among the documents published by the special service is order No. 70 of August 9, 1938 to the units of the 3rd Army. The order was given during the military conflict at Lake Hassan.

Also, the data on Tokyo’s plans is confirmed by the interrogation of the last commander-in-chief of the Kwantung Army, Otozo Yamada, who was appointed commander of the 3rd Army in Manchuria, in 1944 he headed the Kwantung Army. The interrogation was conducted in December 1949 in preparation for the Khabarovsk trial of war criminals. As follows from the protocol, Yamada admitted that in January 1938 he “gave an order to the units of the 3rd Army” about combat readiness in the event of military operations with the Soviet Union.

“The troops of the Kwantung Army … they are being moved to concentrate in the area of the eastern border, ” the order says.

Yamada received a division, two field anti-aircraft artillery detachments, and a temporary auto detachment. Also, an air regiment was deployed in the village of Tuanshanzi, and a squadron was deployed in the Taipinglin area. Their tasks included covering the transfer of two divisions and destroying enemy aircraft.

According to experts, at the end of the 30s, the Japanese military conducted a large-scale “combat reconnaissance”, assessing the combat capability of the Soviet troops.
