Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Chairman of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Arctic Council Nikolai Korchunov said that the Arctic region is turning into an international theater of military operations.
According to him, international military activity in high latitudes is increasing. All this as indicated Korchunov, a very disturbing trend. This cannot but worry Moscow, he stressed.
Commenting on the issue of Sweden and Finland joining NATO, the Ambassador pointed out that the traditional policy of Finland and Sweden, which concerns non-alignment to military alliances, has long created a solid foundation for maintaining peace and stability in high latitudes. However, the possible accession of these two countries to NATO “is unlikely to contribute to achieving this goal.”
Earlier, Korchunov said that the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO will make appropriate adjustments to the development of cooperation in the Arctic. He added that the change in the military-political status of these countries is likely to make certain adjustments to cooperation in high latitudes.
Before that, Sweden and Finland sent applications to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to join the alliance. At the same time, Turkey has promised to block the applications of the Nordic countries if they do not agree with its position on security issues. In particular, we are talking about Kurdish oppositionists who have settled in these countries. As a result, Ankara stressed that it cannot allow NATO to include states where there are representatives of terrorists.
