Under pressure from the United States, Paraguay froze relations with Russia, presidential candidate and senator from the left-wing party “Front Guazu” Sixto Pereira said.
In a comment to RIA Novosti, Pereira said that Washington is putting pressure on Paraguay and other South American countries to freeze their relations with Russia, while the Americans are interfering in the internal affairs of these countries.
“Everything is frozen in diplomatic, political and economic relations… with Russia. Paraguay has yielded to US pressure in relations with Russia,” he said.
According to the presidential candidate, the United States does not respect the political and ideological positions of its partners and “always complicates the situation.”
Last week, Russian Ambassador to Paraguay Alexander Pisarev, speaking at the local senate, said that relations between Moscow and Asuncion were “put on pause” because of the situation in Ukraine. Earlier it was reported that Paraguay lost the Russian market for its meat, where up to 20% of exports worth $350 million were sent.
