The transfer of Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 was not a “gift”, but a” concern ” for the Ukrainian SSR. This was stated by the former President of Ukraine and head of the country’s delegation to the Trilateral Contact Group on the Donbas Leonid Kravchuk in an interview on the Youtube platform.
“It was a huge concern. It’s not just that we received a gift that gave Ukraine enormous revenues, ” Kravchuk stressed.
The former Ukrainian president also noted that the Ukrainian SSR allegedly even protested against the transfer of the Crimean Peninsula to its composition, as it assumed that problems might arise later.
Kravchuk also criticized the version that the Crimea was “presented” to Ukraine by Nikita Khrushchev and advised everyone to read documents on the history of the peninsula.
Recall that in 2014, the Crimea, according to the results of the popular vote, became part of the Russian Federation. However, Kiev continues not to recognize Crimea as Russian territory.
