American experts have criticized Western countries for underestimating Putin’s warnings. Charles Kupchan, Professor of International Relations, called the expansion of NATO to the east a strategic miscalculation. He wrote an article for The National Interest.
The specialist recalled Putin’s speech, which he delivered in Munich in 2007. Then the Russian leader called the admission of new members to NATO a “serious provocation.”
The expert stressed that Moscow’s concerns are well-founded. No one will like the neighborhood with a military unit if it is located along the border with a length of more than 3 thousand kilometers.
Kupchan noted that the United States did not take into account geostrategic realities in vain. In addition, Moscow’s interests and Russia’s right to security were ignored. At the same time, the expert points out that Washington always closely monitors the security of its own borders. So he could understand and take into account the interests of Russia.
