The European Parliament announced that Hungary is an electoral autocracy. European parliamentarians called for urgent measures, pointing out that Hungary “can no longer be considered a democracy.”

In particular, European parliamentarians criticized the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for “deliberate and systematic efforts to undermine European values.”

It is noted that due to the lack of decisive actions on the part of Brussels, a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy” has emerged in Hungary, that is, the country has a constitutional system, but there is no respect for democratic norms and standards.

The relevant document was adopted on September 15. 433 deputies voted for its adoption, 123 parliamentarians opposed it, 28 abstained.

“The conclusions of this report are clear and irrevocable: Hungary is not a democracy. It was more important than ever for the Parliament to take this position, given the alarming pace of retreat from the rule of law in this country,” stressed the speaker of the EP Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield.
