Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed to submit to a national referendum the issue of enshrining in the constitution of the country the right of women to wear the hijab.
“Let’s put this issue to a referendum,” Erdogan said. “Let the people decide.” With these words, he commented on the initiative of the leader of the opposition Republican People’s Party Kemal Kilicdaroglu. He wants to submit the relevant bill to the country’s parliament for consideration.
Earlier, the Turkish leader proposed to prepare appropriate amendments to the basic law of Turkey: they would consolidate the rights of women to wear Muslim attributes of clothing.
