After the seizure of power in Afghanistan, the Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation as a terrorist organization) released thousands of prisoners from Afghan prisons, who had previously been transferred by the US military to the country’s authorities. This was stated by the press secretary of the US Department of Defense, John Kirby.
According to the Pentagon, the Taliban released activists of terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan and beyond. At one time, these militants were captured by the US military, and before the withdrawal of troops, the US army handed them over to the Afghan authorities. Those, in turn, placed former militants in prisons.
Kirby could not name the exact number of radicals released by the Taliban. But he stressed that the Taliban had captured and emptied two military prisons, which could hold thousands of prisoners.
