German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, in an interview with Die Welt journalists, said that Europe’s position on the facts of human rights violations in Belarus remains unchanged, and in this regard, the introduction of new sanctions against the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko is only a matter of time.
According to him, the requirements of the European Union to the Belarusian authorities remain the same. These include the release of political prisoners, dialogue with the opposition, and the holding of free and fair elections.
“The previous measures affecting specific companies and government officials in Lukashenko’s entourage are no longer sufficient… The sanctions should be extended to entire sectors of the Belarusian economy,… and also to deprive Minsk of the opportunity to raise funds within the EU by issuing government bonds”, – said Mas.
Recall that on the eve of the EU imposed sanctions against 78 individuals and 8 companies in Belarus.
