The State Department urged China to take measures to reduce nuclear risks

The press secretary of the US State Department, Ned Price, said during a briefing that the US is concerned about reports that China is increasing its nuclear program, the Izvestia newspaper reports. Thus, he commented on an article in The Washington Post newspaper, according to which the construction of 119 launch shafts for intercontinental ballistic missiles has begun in the northern part of China.

“Such a build-up raises concerns and questions about China’s intentions. From our point of view, this underlines the importance of taking practical measures to reduce nuclear risks,” Price said.

According to him, such behavior demonstrates Beijing’s departure from “a nuclear strategy based on minimal deterrence.”

“We call on Beijing to cooperate with us on practical measures to reduce (the risks of) an arms race, (de-escalation) of tension,” the State Department spokesman added.

Price stressed that US President Joe Biden considers strategic stability a priority, so he is building interaction with Vladimir Putin, a similar position will be applicable to China.
