Readers of the German newspaper Die Welt commented on the resonant statement of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel about the need to improve relations with Russia in order to achieve lasting peace.
Many commentators have stated that it was during Merkel’s chancellorship that Germany and the EU could maintain a relative balance in their interaction with the Kremlin. Subscribers clarified that the current German authorities lack this skill.
One of the users wrote that he had never been a fan of Merkel, but the idea that “lasting peace is possible only with the participation of Russia” is absolutely true.
Another reader noted that Merkel is right, the country has been doing well for a long time, partly because of cheap energy from the Russian Federation.
The OstseeStrand commentator stressed that when former US President Barack Obama called Russia a “regional power”, it became clear that something was boiling in politics. Perhaps it was Merkel who “kept the lid” on this boiling pot for many years.
A reader with the nickname Eala Frya Fresena added that Merkel has more common sense than current German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock and Health Minister Karl Lauterbach.
