In Iran, women started a protest after the death of 22-year-old Maxa Amini. She was beaten to death by vice officers because her head was allegedly loosely covered with a hijab. Authorities said the girl died of a heart attack after four days in a coma.
Protests broke out already at her funeral in the city of Sekkez. The discontented began shouting “death to the dictator!”, clearly referring to the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Some of them went to the office of the local governor, where the police dispersed them with shots and tear gas.
Then Iranian women staged a flash mob on social networks. They began videotaping how they cut their long hair and burn hijabs, while shouting anti-government slogans.
It is noteworthy that even government officials and pro-government journalists joined the harsh criticism of the authorities.
An investigation has been announced in Tehran: the police involved in the death of the girl are under investigation. They could face up to 10 years in prison.
