The American newspaper New York Times reported that until the completion of a special military operation, NATO will not allow Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
According to the observers of the publication, in the event that Ukraine joined NATO, the alliance would have to apply the fifth article of the charter on mutual defense of all members of the bloc.
“It is extremely unlikely that NATO will take Ukraine, which is currently taking part in hostilities, into its ranks. NATO adheres to the principle of collective defense,” noted Dan Bilefsky and Andrew Kramer.
They clarified that now Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance seems unacceptable. It may take months or even years to make such a decision. Representatives of Kiev, in turn, must comply with certain requirements. In particular, to adhere to democracy, individual freedom and comply with the laws.
