Politico published a note by columnist Mujtaba Rahman, which points to the confrontation in the EU over the settlement in Ukraine: French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are opposing the “hawks” mainly from among the newly admitted states to the union.
“Behind public statements of support for Ukraine, there is a quiet tug of war between Germany, France and — until the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi – Italy on the one hand, and Poland, the Baltic states, Scandinavia and Finland on the other,” the Politico article says.
According to Rahman, at the same time, Scholz and Macron are forced to hide from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe their approaches to resolving the conflict – the focus on its speedy completion by diplomatic means.
The reason for such secrecy, according to the author of the publication, is the desire to preserve unity in the ranks of the EU. And such a policy of Paris and Berlin will remain unchanged as long as US support for military actions in Ukraine remains unchanged.
