The European Parliament is preparing to consider the transfer of confiscated property and Russian assets frozen under sanctions to Ukraine. This is reported by Russia Today. At the disposal of the TV company was the text of the appeal of Polish MP Lukasz Kohut to the European Commission.
The parliamentarian stressed that there are numerous villas and yachts of sanctioned Russians in the EU countries. Also, billions of dollars’ worth of bank accounts have been frozen in European banks. Lukash Kohut asked for clarification whether the possibility of their transfer to Ukraine is being considered “for the restoration of the country.”
At the beginning of the summer, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke about the preparation of a legal framework for the transfer of Russian assets to the needs of Ukraine. A similar request to allow the transfer of Russian property to Ukraine was addressed by the US Department to Congress.
The backlash was not long in coming. Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov warned that any attempts to use Russian assets would be regarded as direct theft.
