The leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) that won the parliamentary elections, Anthony Albanese, announced plans to hold personal meetings with the leaders of the United States, Japan and India on May 24 on the sidelines of the Quad summit in Japan.
Earlier it was reported that Albanese will be sworn in on May 23, after which he will fly to Tokyo for the Quad summit. Senator Penny Wong is expected to take the oath of office with him as the new foreign minister, who will also go to Japan for the summit.
Albanese said the upcoming meeting of the leaders of the four countries is “an absolute priority for Australia.”
“It will allow us to send a message to the world that there is a change of government and that there will be some changes in our policy, including on climate change,” he said.
Albanese will reportedly return to Australia on May 25 and schedule the first meeting of the national Cabinet.
The Quad Summit is a quadrilateral security dialogue, the participants of which are Australia, India, the USA and Japan.
