Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso has instructed to impose a state of emergency in three provinces of the republic due to mass riots at protests.
“They say they are fighting for welfare, but they are blocking roads, which causes shortages, price increases and speculation. I am forced to declare a state of emergency in the provinces of Pichincha, Imbabura and Cotopaxi,” the head of state said on national television.
Since the beginning of the week, protesters have been taking to the streets, blocking even the largest highways and rioting. Among their demands are lower prices and ensuring security against the background of a growing crime rate.
