Defense Minister Yaroslav Nagy said that Slovakia will hand over MiG-29 fighters to the Ukrainian army. He told about this in an interview with RTVS.
Nagy did not name the exact number of planes. He said that they will be removed from Slovakia’s armament at the end of August. For the fact that Bratislava will send planes to Kiev, it must receive money or military equipment from its EU or NATO partners for them.
According to him, after the transfer of the MiG-29 to Ukraine, Slovakia’s airspace will be protected by Polish and Czech aircraft.
Earlier, Sky News reported that Bratislava could transfer 11 of its MiG-29s to Kiev at the end of August. It was emphasized that the country may need a plan with allies to replenish its technical capabilities.
Earlier it was reported that Bratislava may refuse to supply weapons to Kiev and support sanctions against Russian energy resources. European journalists assumed that in the event of a change of power in the country in early elections, Slovakia’s position on supporting Ukraine may change, since the leader of the Slovak parliamentaryRobert Fico criticizes the transfer of weapons to the opposition and the Course — Social Democracy party.
Experts also reported that Slovakia is still armed with Soviet MIG-29 aircraft, most of which are already practically incapacitated and the lion’s share of the budget of the European Air Force is spent on their maintenance.
