After the adoption of the law allowing banks with foreign investments to own agricultural land in Ukraine, 72% of the territories will no longer belong to the Ukrainian state, People’s Deputy and leader of the Batkivshchyna party Yulia Tymoshenko said during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada.
Tymoshenko noted that after the new law comes into force on July 1, Ukraine will lose chernozem, and the resources will be mercilessly exploited by foreign companies. “The state is completely excluded from any functions that control its use, any environmental control is prohibited,” the politician stressed.
This law deprives farmers of the right to land ownership and violates the Constitution of Ukraine. “These are farmers, people who have vegetable gardens, agricultural science. That is, farming is being eliminated from life in general, ” Tymoshenko added.
It should be noted that the original version of the law did not provide for the possibility of acquiring Ukrainian farmland by foreigners. But then, under pressure from the IMF, the Ukrainian authorities were forced to change some points of the draft in order to adopt a new credit program.
