Beijing is showing determination in the fight against Taiwan independence. This was stated by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a speech at the opening of the XX Congress of the Communist Party of China.
“In response to the separatist activities aimed at the independence of Taiwan, serious provocations by external forces that interfere in the affairs of the island, we resolutely waged a large-scale struggle against secession,” Xi Jinping stressed. He also noted that China will strive for peaceful reunification with Taiwan, but due to the unpredictability of the situation, it does not abandon the military option.
At the same time, the situation in Hong Kong, according to the Chinese president, has reached a turning point and has moved from chaos to governance. He said that comprehensive management in the special administrative region has been effectively implemented there and the principle of “Patriots rule Hong Kong” has been introduced. Last spring, Hong Kong decided to reform the electoral system. Elections are now allowed therepatriotic candidates who do not pose a threat to national security. Their evaluation is entrusted to the created commission.
The Chinese president also said that the Communist Party opposes hegemonism and brute force.Xi Jinping emphasized that China is helping to build a new type of international relations, therefore it will resist any unilateralism and protectionism.
