President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that NATO countries should launch a “pre-emptive strike” against Russia in the event of an alleged threat of the use of nuclear weapons on its part. He said this during a video interview with the Lowy Institute in Australia.
In his opinion, the alliance should exclude the possibility of using such weapons. In this regard, he argues that preventive strikes are important so that “they know what will happen to them if they are used.”
“And not vice versa – to wait for Russia’s nuclear strikes, then to say: “Oh, you’re so, well, keep it from us!”, – the Telegram channel “Politics of the Country” quotes him.
Earlier on Thursday, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, noted at a briefing that the topic of a “possible nuclear conflict” was being escalated by Western media. According to her, Russia does not intend to participate in this “terrible discourse dedicated to pumping up nuclear rhetoric.”
“The Russian Federation is fully committed to the principle of the inadmissibility of nuclear war,” the diplomat concluded.
The Russian side has repeatedly stated that it acts exclusively according to the country’s Nuclear Doctrine, which is defensive in nature. Moscow considers nuclear weapons only as a deterrent. According to the Doctrine, nuclear weapons can be used, in particular, when “the very existence of a State is threatened”.
