The European Commission is ready to provide additional assistance to Lithuania, including financial assistance, to solve the problem of illegal migration, but it does not intend to finance the construction of barriers. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the press service of the European Commission.

According to the European Commission, the structure is ready to help Lithuania in the operational management of borders, including supporting it with money. At the same time, the main goal of border management is, according to the EC, to ensure that border crossing does not go unnoticed, and the problem of illegal migration remains unresolved. A separate issue is ensuring the right to asylum.

Earlier, Lithuania reported about the desire to build a wall on the border of the republic with neighboring Belarus. This was stated by the country’s Prime Minister Ingrid Shimonite, accusing Minsk of a “hybrid attack” on Lithuania with the help of migrants.

In Belarus, in turn, they claim that they have neither the strength nor the means to restrain the flow of illegal migrants rushing to neighboring Lithuania in order to get to the EU countries.

After this statement by the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, the influx of migrants to Lithuania increased. In the last month alone, the number of migrants who crossed the country’s border turned out to be 12 times greater than in the whole of 2020.
