Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi made a fool of herself by publicly announcing plans to visit Taiwan, said Matthew Krenig, a professor at Georgetown University in Washington.
According to him, instead of widely announcing a trip to Taiwan, Pelosi should have visited the island unexpectedly for the public, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson did earlier this year during a visit to Kiev.
According to the professor, now the American side cannot refuse the visit, as it will be interpreted as weakness in front of Beijing. Krenig believes that if the American delegation refuses to visit Taiwan, China will decide that it will be able to prevent any visits of US officials to Taiwan by exerting appropriate pressure.
Earlier it was reported that in anticipation of Pelosi’s possible trip to Taiwan, the Chinese Navy conducted maneuvers in the South China Sea with live firing.
