The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi, with a story from her childhood, answered the question of how her visit to Taiwan could affect relations between the US and China.
“When I was a little girl, they told me on the beach that if you dig a hole very deep, you can get to China,” Pelosi shared. “So we in Washington have always felt a connection with Beijing.”
Users in social networks criticized such a speech by the speaker, dedicated to the results of the Pacific tour that excited the whole world.
Commentators accused Pelosi of hypocrisy, noting that it is unlikely to improve relations with China by making trips to Taiwan.
“All you have succeeded in is escalating tensions. The world needs leaders fighting for peace,” one user wrote.
