Latvian Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevich did not rule out that the Russian-Belarusian exercises could cause an incident with NATO servicemen in the Baltic States and Poland, the Financial Times reports.
The Latvian minister expressed confidence that the upcoming maneuvers will lead to an increase in tension, as well as “misunderstanding of some actions” on the part of Russia and Belarus.
“When you have a border crisis, major military exercises are taking place near the borders of the North Atlantic Alliance, when you increase the presence of troops on our side (on the Lithuanian, Estonian and Polish), all this, of course, increases the likelihood of incidents,” the portal quotes him BB.LV.
The Zapad-2021 exercises will be held from September 10 to 19 on the territory of Russia and Belarus.
