Moldova will not become part of the European Union in the next 15-20 years, but will be able to ensure its security by uniting with Romania, Romanian MEP Eugen Tomak believes.

“The path to integration into the EU earlier than in 15-20 years cannot be discussed in any way, because the member states will not accept it,” Tomak said on the RFI TV channel.

He noted that the EU is only able to provide Moldova with economic support, and unification with Romania will give strategic stability. According to Tokmak, the decision to unite is the safest and fastest way that can be implemented at any time.

“Integration into the EU does not guarantee that the Russian Federation will not invade it [Moldova]. On the contrary, a peaceful and democratic alliance with Romania provides Moldova with stability from the point of view of security, since it [Romania] is a NATO member state,” the politician said.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed an application for the country’s accession to the European Union on March 3. European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varheli handed over questionnaires to the Foreign Ministers of Georgia and Moldova on April 11 in Luxembourg to start the EU accession procedure. Moldova handed over the first part of the questionnaire to the EU representative on April 22, the second – on May 12.
