Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed solidarity with Kiev, describing what is happening as a “profound turning point”. This was her first public comment since the beginning of the Russian special operation in Ukraine.

Earlier, statements on the Ukrainian crisis were distributed by representatives of Merkel’s office on her behalf.

“I stand in solidarity with Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia, and support their right to self-defense,” the ex-chancellor said on Wednesday, June 1.

Moreover, Merkel expressed support for the efforts of the Federal Government of Germany, the European Union, the United States and partners in the “Big Seven” (G7), the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Alliance. According to her, all of them are focused on the cessation of hostilities.

Former German Chancellor Merkel also called Russia’s special operation in Ukraine “too blatant a violation of international law in the history of Europe after the end of World War II”.
