The presenter of the program is “Polyglot” Dmitry Petrov in an interview with the Newspaper.Ru» said that after the death of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, the eldest son of the ruler, 73-year-old Prince Charles of Wales, became the new ruler of Britain.

He clarified that in Russian Charles became known as Charles III, but in fact he did not change his name. This practice of different pronunciation of the names of European monarchs developed in the Middle Ages, when Latin was the official diplomatic language.

“The name Karl is of Germanic origin. In Latin it sounded like «Carolus», pronounced in France «Charles», in England «Charles». At the same time, always at the interstate level it was «Carolus», since it corresponded to the rules of the Latin language. In turn, Russian historiographyand diplomatic practice has preserved exactly this pronunciation and spelling of the names of Western European monarchs,” Petrov said.

Earlier it was reported that for the UK, the death of Elizabeth II will cost several billion pounds. According to experts, the amount can vary from 1.5 to 6 billion pounds.
