Representatives of the US Democratic Party, Senator Jeff Merkley and Congressman James McGovern, called on the International Olympic Committee to move the 2022 Winter Olympics from China to another country. They believe that the human rights situation in China does not allow holding the Olympic Games in Beijing.

American politicians recalled that they had already appealed to the IOC in 2018 with a request to influence the Chinese authorities to change the situation in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Then the Americans did not receive an answer, and the human rights situation in this region of China has not changed.

Merkley and McGovern also noted that in 2020, the IOC postponed the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo for a year. The cause was the coronavirus pandemic. According to American lawmakers, this indicates that the committee is able to make decisions in a short time. And “if the Olympics can be postponed because of a pandemic, then it can be done because of the genocide.”

The XXIV Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from February 4 to 20, 2022. The capital of China was chosen as the venue for the games six years ago.
