German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that the EU countries should take a unified position in relation to Russia. Only there will Russian President Vladimir Putin begin to take Europe seriously.
According to her, she wants the European Union to talk to Putin against the background of the fact that American President Joe Biden is also talking to him. Merkel stressed that this is “not a conversation of friends” who have good relations.
“Rather, it is about the fact that we as Europe will be stronger when we have a common position,” she said during a conversation with European students at the Conference of the Future of Europe.
According to the Chancellor, the European Union should directly tell Russia about the detected cyber attacks, as well as hybrid military actions and “support for ultranationalist parties”. Merkel is sure that everyone ” should say the same thing to the Russian president.”
Earlier, Merkel positively assessed the decision of European leaders to work out the format of potential negotiations with Russia. According to her, this is a “step forward”.
