Journalist Brendan Cole, in a publication for Newsweek, said that the West considered that it had won a “great victory over Russia at the UN,” but this turned out to be a mistake. According to him, the March vote in the UN General Assembly condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine could have been presented by Western diplomats as a “great victory”, but the formalized vote actually masked a failure in terms of explaining the position of the West.

As the author of the article noted, there is a widespread position in the Global South that Russia was forced to launch a special operation. Cole stressed that there is a deep resentment against the West for its colonial past, which overcomes any suspicions directed against the Russian side.

The journalist believes that the United States and its Western allies have been looking for a way to exclude Russia from the G20 for a long time, but it turned out to be virtually impossible to do so, since a number of countries, including India, Brazil, South Africa, China and Indonesia, are not ready to support such a step. Cole concluded that the global world order is turning away from the US and EU countries, and the condemnation of Russia has not received a wide response outside these states.
