The head of the temporary commission of the Federation Council on information policy Alexei Pushkov warned that disconnecting Russia from the global Internet is possible. According to him, such a scenario cannot be ruled out.
At a round table in the Federation Council, he noted that the sphere of the Internet and digital sovereignty is the area where “we must prepare for a possible negative scenario.” At the same time, Pushkov stressed that Russia can benefit from such a development of events, as this will allow it to become more independent in terms of information.
On Wednesday, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that Washington opposes disconnecting Russia from the global network. According to him, information should continue to flow to the Russian Federation, and the Internet should remain free and open inside Russia itself.
Before that, the head of the Ministry of Finance Maksut Shadaev, speaking at the New Horizons forum, said that the Russian authorities do not intend to close access to the YouTube video hosting. He recalled that the Russian Federation faces the task of inventing a domestic competitive analogue of the American video platform.
