The migration bureau of the city of Sapporo is still investigating the citizenship and identity of the person who allegedly sailed from Russia. This was stated in the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in the region. Recall, according to local media, a person sailed to the island of Hokkaido from Kunashir and asked for asylum in Japan.

The Russian Consulate General has already contacted the migration bureau and they confirmed that the person is still with them. Employees of the department, after establishing the identity of the newcomer, will either have to issue him a temporary permit to stay in the country, or deport him to his homeland.

There is no information about how the Russian got to Japan. The distance between Kunashir and Hokkaido is about 20 km.
