Yuriy Vitrenko, Chairman of the Board of the National Joint-Stock Company Naftogaz of Ukraine, said that Kiev will insist on the need for sanctions against the operator of the Nord Stream-2 project.
According to him, the Ukrainian side has carefully read the joint statement of the US administration and the German government. As it turned out, the problems and challenges facing Ukraine remained unanswered.
Vitrenko claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly uses gas as a geopolitical weapon. In this regard, US sanctions should be applied against Nord Stream AG and other key participants in this project, Vitrenko is sure.
In addition, the issue of threats from the project will be discussed during the visit of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to the United States. Vitrenko again noted that now there are enough tools to stop the Nord Stream 2 .
Earlier, Vitrenko said that Ukraine should be accepted into NATO, since Russia uses the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline under construction as a “geopolitical weapon”.
Germany and the United States have come to an agreement on the gas pipeline. The American side has put forward a number of conditions for the launch of the Nord Stream-2 . In particular, Berlin should use all means of influence to ensure that Russia extends the agreement with Ukraine on gas transit through its territory. In addition, Germany undertakes to exert pressure on the Russian Federation in the case of using “blue fuel” as a weapon against European countries.
