According to the New York Times, Charles A. Kupchan, a professor of international relations at Georgetown University, called the beginning of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev as a way to avoid a direct clash between Russia and NATO.

According to the expert, the Ukrainian conflict is escalating more and more. While the United States and its allies are sending more and more weapons to Ukraine, the Russian Federation is striking Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

“The risk of a larger-scale war between NATO and Russia is growing every day, as is the risk that the economic effect of a prolonged war could undermine Western democracy,” Kupchan notes.

At the same time, he notes that it is the West that needs to become the “conductor of diplomacy” and the initiator of negotiations, without expecting this step from Kiev.

“The time has come for the United States and its allies to take a direct part in shaping Ukraine’s strategic goals, managing the conflict and searching for a diplomatic endgame,” the professor believes.
