US President Joe Biden said, speaking at a campaign rally in Washington, that American democracy is at stake in the upcoming midterm congressional elections. As the main threat to American democracy, he pointed out the political competitors of his party, that is, the Republicans. They have a chance to deprive the Democrats of control over both chambers of the Congress.
“It is true that we are now fighting for democracy, for dignity and honor, for prosperity and progress, for the very soul of America. Don’t be fooled – democracy is written into the ballots,” Biden said.
At the same time, the US president reproached opponents that they allegedly do not respect the institution of democratic elections when he gives victory not to their party, hinting at the protests that his own victory caused by a minimal margin.
Responding to these reproaches, the leader of the Republican minority in Congress and a possible future speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, accused the current US president of a tendency to sow discord in America at a time when it needs unity.
